Welcome Back To The 2026-2027 School Year

Posted Date: 08/14/26 (02:58 PM)

Dear JMMS Families,

Welcome to the 2026-2027 school year! We are excited to welcome back our students and families, both new and returning, to Joseph Melillo Middle School. The first day of school is Thursday, August 27th, and we are eagerly preparing for another fantastic year of learning, growth, and success.

At JMMS, we are committed to providing a supportive and engaging learning environment where all students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. This year, we will continue to focus on strong instruction, student well-being, and building a positive school culture where every student feels known, supported, and challenged. We also value our partnership with families and know that strong communication between home and school is essential to student success.

We are also excited to welcome Erica Tamsin as our new Assistant Principal. Erica joins us with experience in teaching and instructional leadership, and we are thrilled to have her become part of the JMMS community. Please join us in welcoming Mrs. Tamsin to JMMS! She is looking forward to getting to know our students, families, and staff throughout the year.

Important Information for the School Year

  • First Day of School

    • The first day of school is Thursday, August 27th.

    • Please ensure your child arrives on time, as we will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. Doors will open for drop-off at 7:40 a.m.

    • Students should bring a charged Chromebook on the first day of school. Please check your child's Chromebook for damage and contact our IT department at technologyservices@east-haven.k12.ct.us or (203) 468-3911 with any concerns.

  • Student Schedules

    • The Parent Portal will open on Monday, August 24th, and families will be able to view student schedules at that time.

    • 6th grade students will receive their schedules in person at 6th Grade Orientation on August 24th.

  • 6th Grade Orientation

    • Monday, August 24th, 5:30–7:30 p.m.

    • Doors open at 5:10 p.m.

    • All 6th grade students will receive their schedules that evening and will have an opportunity to become familiar with JMMS before the first day of school.

  • School Supply Lists

    • School supply lists have been sent to families through ParentSquare.

    • Supply lists will also be available through the JMMS website and the links below for easy reference.

  • Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures

    • When dropping off your student, please pull up past the front doors to the end of the circle to prevent traffic from backing up onto Hudson Street.

    • When picking up your student, do not take a left into JMMS. Please continue to the end of Hudson Street and around the circle so that all cars are taking a right into the front circle. This is extremely important to prevent traffic from backing up on Hudson Street and North High Street.

    • Students may only be picked up in the circle. Please be patient and wait your turn. When everyone cooperates, we are able to complete dismissal efficiently and safely.

  • School Hours

    • 8:00 a.m. – 2:25 p.m.

    • Students should be in their classrooms by 8:00 each morning.

    • Students arriving after 8:00 will need to be signed in by a parent or guardian.

    • Students may not be signed out after 2:00 p.m. Please plan appointments accordingly.
